FAQ
Questions Parents and Athletes Ask
If your question is not answered here, the best next step is a quick phone call. We are happy to talk through anything.
Getting Started
The first step is a phone call. Call (629) 299-1221 and we will have a brief conversation about your athlete’s age, sport, goals, and where they are right now. From there, we will recommend the right starting point — whether that is an individual assessment, a group training session, or a specific program. No commitment is required to have the initial conversation.
No. WilCo Athletics does not require long-term contracts. We believe in earning your commitment through results, not locking you in with paperwork. Program options are structured to give flexibility while encouraging consistency.
Athletic shoes (court shoes or turf shoes depending on the session), comfortable athletic clothing, and a water bottle. No special equipment is needed — we provide everything else.
Absolutely. Parents are welcome to observe sessions. We want you to see exactly what your athlete is doing, how they are being coached, and why each exercise is part of their program.
Youth Athletic Training
Structured movement training can begin as early as age 10-11, focusing on coordination, body awareness, and foundational movement patterns. By age 13-14, athletes are typically ready for more structured speed, agility, and introductory strength work. There is no single right age — it depends on the individual athlete’s maturity and readiness.
In most cases, no. Team practice focuses on sport-specific skills — plays, strategy, and teamwork. It rarely addresses the underlying physical qualities like sprint mechanics, foundational strength, movement quality, and deceleration control. These require separate, structured training from someone with expertise in athletic development.
No. This is one of the most persistent myths in youth sports. Decades of research from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and other organizations have found no evidence that properly supervised strength training affects growth plates or stunts growth. In fact, it supports healthy bone development.
Camps and classes are typically one-size-fits-all, short-term programs. WilCo provides structured, progressive, coached development over time. Every athlete gets an assessment, a personalized starting point, and programming that evolves as they improve. We are building long-term athletic capacity, not running a weekend event.
Athletic development improves an athlete’s physical tools — speed, strength, power, and durability. These qualities absolutely make athletes more recruitable. However, WilCo Athletics does not promise scholarships or college placement. Recruiting depends on many factors beyond physical ability, including academics, sport skill, exposure, and opportunity.
Not at all — multi-sport athletes often benefit the most from structured athletic development because the physical foundation transfers across every sport. We program around your athlete’s competitive calendar so training complements their sport commitments rather than competing with them.
Safety & Training Approach
Safe strength development starts with coaching quality, not equipment. We begin with bodyweight exercises and foundational movement patterns. External loading is added gradually based on the athlete’s demonstrated competency, physical maturity, and ability to maintain proper form. Every rep is coached and supervised.
Most non-contact sports injuries happen during deceleration, landing, and change of direction — moments when the body cannot control the forces being applied. Structured training teaches athletes how to absorb force, decelerate safely, and move under control. Stronger, better-moving athletes get hurt less.
Sports practice develops sport skills — plays, strategy, teamwork, and sport-specific technique. Athletic development builds the physical foundation underneath those skills — speed, strength, power, mobility, and body control. They are complementary, not the same thing. The best athletes invest in both.

Adult Fitness
No. The program starts where YOU are, not where you think you should be. The initial assessment identifies your current abilities, limitations, and goals. Everything is built progressively from that starting point. The most important step is starting.
No. This is individually programmed, professionally coached training. You are not doing the same workout as everyone else. Your program is designed for your body, your goals, and your limitations. Sessions are supervised and adjusted in real time.
Most personal trainers create workouts. WilCo creates progressive programs with measurable benchmarks, structured periodization, and ongoing adjustments based on your results. The difference is between having someone count your reps and having someone drive your long-term development.
